University Clinic Golnik (Slovenia) awarded Research Excellence Grant

A Research Excellence Grant was recently awarded to the University Clinic of Respiratory and Allergic Diseases Golnik, Slovenia. Golnik brings expertise in the area of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Currently, there is very limited knowledge on the best method for DNA extraction from sputum samples. There are no reliable data on the lowest amount of extracted DNA from clinical respiratory tract samples that allows reliable detection of pathogenic bacteria. In addition, knowledge on how to evaluate the quality and reliability of commercially available PCR kits when used with viscous clinical samples is scarce.  Golnik will provide sputum samples from well-defined patients with COPD and will perform traditional microbiologic testing by cultivation, isolation and identification of pathogenic bacteria. Golnik will then evaluate different DNA extraction approaches and PCR tests. The grant started in November.
